The 1841-C is tied for fourth rarest of 24 half eagles from this mint. It is seldom seen above AU55 and it is very rare in full Mint State with no more than six or seven known to me.
This well struck example is among the few extent 1841-C half eagles in this grade range with natural color. Both sides show rich reddish-gold hues which deepen at the rim. The surfaces, as usual, are abraded with the most noticeable marks appearing in the right obverse field near stars eleven and twelve. The aforementioned color gives this coin well above-average eye appeal.
There are no auction records for a CAC approved AU55 example of this date. Heritage 2/14: 4117, graded AU55 by NGC but not CAC approved, sold for $4,113. Only three AU55′s have been auctioned since the beginning of 2007.
CAC has approved two in this grade with four finer.
