Variety-2.
The 1840-C is a numismatically significant issue as the first Liberty Head half eagle from this mint with the modified portrait and the mintmark placed on the reverse. It is among the scarcer half eagles from Charlotte and many of the 150-200 known show considerable mint-made roughness. This is one of the most difficult Charlotte half eagles to find with original color and choice surfaces.
This is among the more attractive collector grade 1840-C half eagles I have seen with nice dark green-gold color and contrasting splashes of russet and vivid orange-gold. The surfaces are uncommonly free of marks and show no planchet issues. The strike is a bit weak at the centers and this is common for the date. The overall eye appeal is far above average for the issue.
Only two EF45′s have sold at auction since 2004 and the last PCGS to be offered brought $4,888 as Heritage 5/04: 9438.
A wonderfully original coin for the specialized collector of Charlotte half eagles.
CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
