SOLD- $5.00 – 1838-D PCGS VF25 CAC

PCGS Lookup Number 8178
Variety 1-A, the only variety of the year.
The 1838-D half eagle is a numismatically significant issue as it is a one-year type and it is the first year of issue for any coinage from the new Dahlonega mint. It is not scarce in collector grades but most of the coin which fall into this category have been cleaned and have poor eye appeal.
This handsome example shows a good amount of wear but it is well detailed and has a warm, even appearance on account of its deep russet color which is a bit deeper and more extensive on the obverse than the reverse. Both sides are free of detracting marks and much of the original detail remains visible to the naked eye.
A PCGS VF25 with CAC sold at auction as Heritage 7/12: 4848 for $6,325; it was in an older green label holder and I graded it VF30 to VF35. No other examples in this grade have appeared since early 2007.
Here is a chance to obtain a very cosmetic example of this popular and historic issue with all the bells and whistles for less than $5,000!
CAC has approved three in this grade with 122 finer.
