SOLD- $5.00 – 1838-D PCGS AU58 CAC, ex Bass

PCGS Lookup Number 8178
Bass collection pedigree. Variety 1-A.
The 1838-D half eagle is an issue with a high level of demand due to its status as the first year of issue for any denomination from this mint as well as being a distinct one year type coin: the only Classic Head half eagle from Dahlonega. It is not that scarce a coin in terms of overall rarity but properly graded AU55 to AU58 pieces are very scarce and Uncirculated examples are very rare.
I have handled three CAC approved AU58 1838-D half eagles this year sand this may be my favorite. This lustrous Gem Slider has lovely vibrant yellow-gold color with just a trace of rub on Liberty’s cheek. The strike is sharp and even while the surfaces show just a few tiny scuffs in the fields. Most importantly, this coin has never been scrubbed and it is very rare a such.
No PCGS AU58 1838-D half eagles have sold at auction since July 2007. A non-CAC example graded by NGC sold for $25,300 as Heritage 4/12: 5263.
An important coin for the date or type collector with a great appearance and a wonderful pedigree as well.
CAC has approved three in this grade with one finer.
Ex Bass III: 341 (at $11,500) and earlier from Stack’s DiBello collection sale.
