Housed in an old NGC “fatty” holder and, in my opinion, a full AU55 by today’s standards.
The 1837 is the second scarcest P mint issue of this design after the 1834 Crosslet 4. It is significantly more difficult to locate in AU grades than the 1834 Plain 4 although it doesn’t bring a substantial premium.
This lightly worn example is lustrous and it shows light green-gold and orange hues. There is some flatness on the obverse which is weakness of strike; the reverse is well detailed and very lustrous.
Heritage 4/14: 6323 sold for $1,528. This NGC AU53 was not choice and was not approved by CAC.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 25 finer.
