Every date in the Capped Head Left half eagle type (1813-1834) is rare with the exception of the 1813 and the misunderstood 1814/3 has a total known population which estimated to be slightly below 100 coins. This date is sometimes available in Uncirculated (MS61 to MS63) but attractive examples in collector grades are almost never seen.

This very pleasing slider is sharply struck from typically clashed dies. As is common for this issue, the centers are boldly impressed while the borders show some weakness. The light green-gold surfaces are exceptional clean and what look like hairlines in the field are, in fact, raised die finishing lines as made. Some reddish toning can be seen around the stars and this further adds to the overall eye appeal.

An underwhelming NGC AU58 1814/3 half eagle sold for $14,688 as Heritage 1/14: 6615 and no PCGS graded examples have sold at auction since April 2009 (which is the only one in well over a decade, by the way).

This date is unfairly lumped with the common 1813 but it is actually quite rare in all grades and it compares favorably to the higher-priced and more famous 1818, 1820 and 1823.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 10 finer.
