All 1809 half eagles are overdates and this is the only date of this design for which there are no normal dates known. The 1809/8 is a scarcer date which is comparable in overall rarity to the 1808 and the 1811 Small 5 but which is rarer than these tow issues in Uncirculated. The 1809/8 is scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare above this; most of the coins in 62 holders have been dipped and are bright as an appearance.
This is an exceptional coin for the grade and one which, in the continuum between 62 and 63 is much closer to the latter than the former. It is undipped and seemingly original with really nice medium to deep orange-gold color with a natural configuration which deepens at the borders. The surfaces are free of “chatter” or adjustment marks and the luster has a pleasing frosty texture. If not for a small old scratch near star three on the left obverse, this coin would easily qualify at the 63 level and a $25,000+ price tag.
There are no recent APR’s for CAC approved MS62 examples of this issue.
A perfect type coin for the collector who wants a truly choice Capped Bust Left half eagle.
CAC has approved five in this grade with nine finer.
