BD-4, High R-4. Draped Bust variety.
I recently sold an amazingly toned VF 1807 quarter eagle and, much to my surprise, I was just able to purchase a similarly toned 1807 half eagle–from the same source (!). This coin is among the most astonishingly toned U.S. gold coins of any denomination I have seen. Both sides show very deep reddish-gold and dark russet hues which are contrasted by lighter hues on the devices. This toning has given both sides of the coin a decidedly cameo appearance which is very attractive in my opinion.
I paid a strong premium for this coin but if you like amazing, fresh original early gold in collector grades you will appreciate the rarity of coins such as this.
CAC has approved one in this grade with 39 finer.
