BD-6, Rarity-2. Knobbed 6 variety.
The 1806 Knobbed 6 is the most common date/variety of the Capped Bust Right half eagle type. It is frequently seen in the lower AU grades but it has become hard to locate properly graded AU58′s, especially with nice color and surfaces.
This Gem Slider is exactly the sort of early gold coin which appeals to sophisticated collectors. It is very lightly worn with only the slightest amount of friction seen on the cheek of Liberty; the luster is nearly full and has a pleasing frosty texture. The best feature of this coin is its delightful natural color with the obverse a medium orange-gold with some reddish hues kissing the upper border around 12:00; the reverse is deeper in hue with a splash of fiery orange-gold at the center and scattered areas of orange and red at the rim. Other than two tiny marks in the right obverse field, the surfaces are nearly perfect and this piece has eye appeal to spare.
No AU58 examples of this date/variety have sold at auction so far in 2013. In 2012, there were three AU58′s, none of which were approved by CAC.
You can buy a low-end slabbed AU58 1806 Knobbed 6 half eagle for $11,000-12,000 or you can stretch an extra 10-20% and buy a beautiful CAC-approved piece like this. The decision is yours…
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 44 finer.
