SCARCE LOW MINTAGE 1884 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 1,950 quarter eagles were struck for circulation in 1884. The survival rate is higher than one might expect but this is still a scarce issue which is not often seen higher than the MS60 to MS62 range.

This semi-prooflike example shows nice natural orange and lemon-gold color atop reflective surfaces which unfairly magnify the scattered abrasions. A small area of scuffs in the left obverse field limit the grade.

No PCGS MS61's have sold at auction since the February 2/06 Goldberg event. Said coin brought $2,070.

An interesting project for the collector would be a date run of quarter eagles from 1880 through 1894.
