A total of 67,000 1862-S quarters were struck but nearly all were melted and today only a few hundred are known, mostly in EF and lower grades. There are as many as eight to ten in Uncirculated but nearly all of these are in the MS60 to MS62 range and the best example I have personally seen is Eliasberg 2: 1480, which I graded MS64 back in 1996; it sold for a reasonable $7,700
This golden-grey example is extremely well detailed with the centers especially bold. The obverse shows a few marks on Liberty’s right (facing) arm but has clean fields; the reverse is a bit more lustrous and is choicer with uncommonly clean fields.
There have been just three MS62′s sold at auction since 1906 and the best of the three, a PCGS/OGH example, brought $5,750 as Heritage 12/11: 3471.
Given the fact that a decent quality EF 1862-S quarter is a coin which trades in the $1,500-2,000+ range it seems logical to me that an MS62 should be worth at least $5,000 to $6,000 if not more. This piece is a solid value for the savvy collector!
Ex Heritage 11/12: 3522 where it brought $3,909.
