Crosslet 4 variety. McCloskey 5-D, R-4.

While not as well known as the branch mint issues of this design, the 1834 Crosslet 4 is the rarest Classic Head half eagle. It is not often seen above AU50 to AU53 and it becomes very rare in Uncirculated. The best I have personally seen is an NGC MS64 which was last sold by Stack’s in their October 2008 auction for $94,875.

This is a pleasing example with a good amount of remaining luster. Both sides show light yellowish-gold color with a few marks, consistent with the grade, seen in the fields. This date is extremely hard to find with good surfaces and luster and this piece has better-than average overall eye appeal.

No PCGS AU53 1834 Crosslet 4 half eagles have been sold at auction since Heritage 1/09: 5370 which realized $8,050.

As Classic Head gold becomes more and more popular, it seems to me that this issues, which is clearly the rarest half eagle of this design, should become a five-figure coin in this grade.
