With Arrows Variety. Housed in an Old Green label Holder and very choice for the grade by today’s standards.
With Arrows dimes were struck only in 1873 and 1874 and this type was created when the weight of this denomination was increased. The 1873 Philadelphia issue is many times scarcer than the 1874, especially in Gem Uncirculated. The 1873 Arrows is rare in MS65 and very rare in MS66 as indicated by the current PCGS and NGC population figures of four (with none better) at either service.
This is a wonderful Gem example housed in an old holder and obviously untouched for over two decades. It is exceedingly frosty with the obverse a bit more reflective in texture than the reverse. Both sides are mostly untoned with silvery-white centers framed by dappled russet and blue pastels at the borders. The strike is very sharp while the surfaces are extremely clean and lack all but a few small ticks. The appearance of this coin is totally “fresh” and I can not recall personally having seen a finer business strike 1873 Arrows Dime.
A PCGS MS66, not approved by CAC, sold for $8,625 as Heritage 6/10: 538 and the color was very “funky” in my opinion. An NGC MS66 sold for $9,200 back in February, 2008.
This is clearly among the finest known for the date and it is the only 1873 Arrows Dime in this grade with CAC approval. An exciting coin for the Seated Dime specialist or the collector working on a world-class type set.
CAC has approved just this one coin in MS66 with none finer.
