VERY RARE PROOF 1855 WITH ARROWS DIME

An estimated 25 pieces were struck and there are around 15 or so know today with most in the PR63 to PR64 range. This issue is numismatically desirable as one of two realistically obtainable With Arrows Proofs of the 1853-1855 type.

This is a very choice example with deep but not obscuring russet and gold color which changes to red and electric blue at the reverse border. The obverse is of full Gem quality and has rich, vibrantly reflective fields; the reverse shows a few mint-made areas of roughness at the IM in DIME which narrowly removes this coin from consideration as a full-blown Gem. The eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.

The Gardner-Eliasberg coin, graded PR64 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $14,100 in May 2015 and, in my opinion, it was not as pretty as the present piece due to be slightly dark and a bit “burnt” by the toning.

Early Proofs like this are currently out of favor and they represent tremendous opportunity for the collector with foresight.

CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer (non-Cameo designation).
