Coin Description

RARE CHOICE AU 1856-C QUARTER EAGLE

Only 7,913 1856-C quarter eagles were made and I rank this as the third rarest quarter eagle, overall, from the Charlotte mint. The 1856-C is also one of the most poorly made Southern quarter eagles and this is often compounded by harsh cleaning(s).

This is an especially nice piece which is fresh to the market. It is better detailed than normal with just some minor weakness on Liberty’s head. The color is a nice, rich russet which is natural and “right” for the issue and the surfaces are choice with just a few stray ticks and marks seen with the naked eye.

The last nice NGC AU55 1856-C quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $4,230 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 6046.

Here is a decidedly above-average example of this rare, underappreciated Charlotte quarter eagle.
