VERY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1853-D QUARTER EAGLE PEDIGREED TO THE BAREFORD SALE
Variety 17-N.
Only 3,178 quarters eagles dated 1853-D were made and I rank this as the seventh rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle. There are around 100 known, mostly in lower grades. I am aware of just five or six in Uncirculated with none grading higher than MS61 to MS62. The finest I am aware of is the Duke’s Creek NGC MS62 closely followed by the James Stack coin, also in an NGC 62 holder.
This fresh-to-the-market coin traces its provenance to the famous Harold Bareford sale conducted by Stack’s in December 1978. It has been in one collection since then and is being offered to collectors for the first time in nearly forty years. This piece is well struck for the issue with full star radials and just minor weakness on the eagle’s right leg. The surfaces are clean and the color is a pleasing bright yellow-gold. What appear to be two scratches on the obverse are mint-made and are seen on all higher grade 1853-D quarter eagles. The grade is limited by some luster breaks in the obverse fields which are likely the result of cabinet friction.
The last PCGS MS61 1853-D quarter eagle to sell at auction realized $16,450 as Lot 1696 in the Goldberg 6/15 sale.
