RARE AND POPULAR 1845-O QUARTER EAGLE
Only 4,000 were struck and the 1845-O is, by far, the scarcest quarter eagle made at the New Orleans mint. It is seen most often in the VF-EF range and nice AU’s are very scarce, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This fresh-to-the-market example shows uncharacteristic originality; a feature not seen on most 1845-O quarter eagles. Both sides show nice deep russet hues which shade to a reddish-gold. The surfaces are choice and lack the dramatic marks common to the issue. The centers show some softness and this is more noticeable on the reverse. This piece is far above-average for the date and the grade and I have seen inferior 1845-O quarter eagles in AU55 holders.
The last NGC AU53 to sell at auction realized $6,325 as Heritage 7/12: 4703; it was stripped and unoriginal. A PCGS AU53 with questionable color sold for $7,931 as Stacks Bowers 1/13: 12593.
This date has become popular in recent years but I feel that it is still underappreciated when compared to less rare Charlotte and Dahlonega quarter eagles of this era.
