OGH 1844-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 5-I. Housed in an old green label holder and clearly better than its assigned grade.

The 1844-D is a commonly seen Dahlonega quarter eagle but it is often poorly struck and very bright from recent dippings. Probably fewer than 20% of the survivors show original surfaces and have good eye appeal.

This deep russet example shows the sharpness of a 30 to 35 coin but has two old marks in the right obverse and another diagonal mark on the reverse below the right edge of the F in OF. The eye appeal is still excellent.

PCGS VF25 examples of this date sold for $1,528 in 2012 (this coin) and $1,610 in 2010.

Nice quality for less than $2,000.
