NICE PCGS AU58 1861-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Because its population was not overly impacted by shipwreck discoveries, the 1861-S has proven to be the scarcest Civil War double eagle from the San Francisco mint. It is hard to find in properly graded AU58 and it remains a rare coin in Uncirculated with most of the known pieces in the MS60 to MS61 range.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows no real wear but there is just enough friction on the high spots to justify its assigned grade. The surfaces are very lustrous and this is a nice contrast to the typical AU58 whose luster has been dulled by dipping or processing. Splashes of rich natural orange-gold are most notable at the right obverse and the left reverse. Some scuffs can bs seen and these are from the coin likely having been shipped loose in a bag.

The last two non-CAC PCGS AU58 APR’s are $6,463 for Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14326 and Heritage 10/14: 5066 sold for $6,756.

If available, a non-CAC PCGS MS61 1861-S would sell for more than double the price of this AU58 and I doubt you would see much difference in quality.
