SCARCE LOW MINTAGE 1871 QUARTER EAGLE
Only 5,320 business strike quarter eagles were struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1871 and fewer than 200 are known today, mostly in EF and AU grades. This date is a bit more prevalent in Uncirculated than other P mint quarter eagles of the 1867-1872 range but it is still rare with around 15 or so known.
This semi-prooflike example has typical surfaces for this date with some scuffs seen on the obverse and the reverse. But it is fresh and attractive with nice even rose and orange colors on the obverse; the reverse shows some deeper hues with a splash of reddish iridescence on the border at 7:00.
The last two MS61 1871 quarter eagles to sell at auction were both in PCGS holders. One sold for $1,880 in 2/14 while the other brought $1,725 in April 2012.
An affordable but scarce coin which is hard to find in grades higher than this.
