Only 16,000 were issued and the 1870-S quarter eagle is seen much less often than the 1868-S, 1869-S, 1871-S or 1872-S. It is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare to very rare in Uncirculated with probably no more than seven or so known.
This frosty slider shows nearly full mint luster atop lightly abraded medium orange-gold surfaces. There is a curving mint-made lintmark that runs up from star three on the obverse and a few ticks in the left obverse field; the reverse is clean and choice. For the date, the strike is excellent and this is a pleasing example overall.
There are two APR’s for PCGS graded AU58 1870-S quarter eagles with CAC approval. The most recent, ex Heritage 9/13: 5089, brought $2,585 while the first, ex Heritage 9/10: 5215, sold for $2,990.
At just a smidgen over $2,000, this coin is great value.
CAC has approved four in this grade with just one finer (MS63).
