50 coins were struck but fewer than half are known and this example is clearly the finest known for the date. This is the earliest date quarter eagle in PR67DCAM at PCGS; the next earliest is a single example dated 1883 (!)

This is an amazing coin which is one of the finest non-common date Proof gold coins of any denomination which I have seen. It is totally original with lovely light orange-gold color and very strong contrast between the frosted devices and the mirror fields. There are no hairlines or mint-caused marks and the appearance is really quite remarkable.
