A total of 23,376 examples were made but economic conditions associated with the Civil War caused many 1865-S quarter eagles to be melted and today this is a scarce date in any grade. It is an issue which is not often seen above AU55 and I know of just two or three in Uncirculated, the finest of which is a PCGS MS64 that is ex Bass IV: 218 at $20,700.
This piece shows a good deal of luster and has nice orange-gold color at the borders on both sides. There are a few marks that are consistent with the assigned grade but the eye appeal is clearly above average for the date and grade.
There are just two APR’s for this date in AU55 since 2007 and the last was a PCGS coin that brought $2,185 as Heritage 5/08: 3020.
CAC has approved just one in this grade and one finer (an AU58).
