RARE 1863-S QUARTER EAGLE

The 1863-S is among the rarest San Francisco quarter eagles from the standpoint of overall rarity with an estimated 75 or so known, mainly in the VF-EF range. Properly graded AU pieces are very scarce and are in demand on account of their Civil War association.

Were it not for a small mark adjacent to star seven, this piece would likely have graded AU53 to AU55 and it is still nice for the grade with natural russet color seen atop “meaty” surfaces. The detail is excellent as is the overall eye appeal.

Only one PCGS AU50 (this coin) has ever sold at auction.

This piece sold for way too much in its last auction appearance and I am pleased to offer it to collectors at a more palatable price.

CAC has approved just one in AU50 with four finer.
