RARE 1862-S QUARTER EAGLE
The 1862-S is one of the two scarcest collectible S mint quarter eagles along with the 1863-S. There are fewer than 100 known in all grades with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. The finest known is an amazing PCGS MS63+ which I paid $43,700 for in the February 2012 Goldberg sale.
This evenly worn example shows a typical weak strike on the reverse but this is a full EF40 with clean, light orange-gold surfaces.
No PCGS EF40 has ever sold at auction. The last PCGS EF45 was sold by Stacks in 2010 for $3,450.
