The 1857-O is numismatically significant as the final quarter eagle produced at this mint. Only 34,000 were produced and this date is not often seen in grades above AU55. It is available from time to time with natural color and choice surfaces but more are being dipped and processed every year.
This pleasing slider example shows rich natural russet and honey-gold color on the obverse and reverse. Both sides are lustrous and show just a hint of friction. The eye appeal is excellent and I have seen less attractive 1857-O quarter eagles in MS61 holders.
A less choice NGC AU58 with CAC approval sold for $2,233 as Heritage 1/14: 6448.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 8 finer.
