Only 2,364 examples were produced and the 1857-D has one of the lowest mintage figures of any quarter eagle made at this mint. It is a bit less rare than one might expect in higher grades (Au58 to MS61) and I have long felt that this was due to a small hoard having been discovered at one time. This piece is semi-prooflike with some reddish-gold color and a considerable amount of detail. There are some circulation marks seen in the fields and this is unusual as the 1857-D is a date that doesn’t seem to have seen much circulation. In my experience, it is very hard to find properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins. The last comparable APR was Heritage 9/12: 4792 (graded by PCGS) which sold for a very strong $7,050.
