In higher grades, the 1856-O is the second rarest New Orleans quarter eagle after the 1845-O. To the best of my knowledge, there are only four of five 1856-O quarter eagles known in Uncirculated with the best of these grading MS62.
This is a very fresh example with original color and surfaces; a feature which is very seldom seen on this date. Both the obverse and reverse show warm honey-gold color with a considerable amount of underlying luster; a good amount of dirt can be seen in the lettering. There is some dirt on the obverse rim at stars three and four; the reverse shows a faint scratch below TES in STATES.
There are no auction records for an AU58 from either NGC or PCGS with CAC approval.
An extremely challenging issue to locate in properly graded AU58.
CAC has approved three in this grade with one finer (MS62).
