Variety 1.

The 1852-C is the seventh rarest of 20 quarter eagles from this mint. Of the 9,772 struck, there an estimated 150 known with around three dozen in AU and another three to five in Uncirculated. Properly graded AU coins are scarce and seldom show natural color and choice surfaces.

This coin more closely resembles an AU55 than an AU50 and it has a ton of “meat” below the pleasing deep even orange-gold and greenish colors. The strike is a bit better than average for the date and the surfaces are choice except for a few faint old marks below the eagle’s right wing.

The last PCGS AU50 example to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 8/14: 4312 which went cheaply at $3,055. Before this, DLRC auctioned another PCGS AU50 for $3,910 in their 4/09 sale.

This date is seldom available for sale and is almost never offered with such good eye appeal.
