The 1851-D is the 9th rarest of 20 quarter eagles from this mint. There are an estimated 100-125 known from an original mintage of 11,264. It is not often seen in AU50 and better and I regard this as one of the more undervalued issues from this mint.
The strike on this coin is typical for the issue with weakness noted at the centers, especially on the reverse. However, there is more than enough luster to suggest an AU50 grade and the obverse is actually closer to an AU53 or even AU55 in terms of appearance. The color is a medium greenish-yellow and there are an average number of small ticks seen in the fields as is common on 1851-D quarter eagles.
No certified AU50 examples of this date have sold at auction since September 2002 (!) when a piece brought $3,335 as Heritage 9/02: 7985.
