The 1850-D is the most available Dahlonega quarter eagle from the 1850′s but properly graded AU55;s are very scarce. In Uncirculated, this date is exceedingly rare with just three to five known to me. Thus, a nice high end AU is about the best available and very few have natural color and choice surfaces.
This very choice example is well made for the issue and it shows a significant amount of natural luster. Both sides show really attractive medium fiery orange-gold toning which imparts far better eye appeal than usual for this issue.
No PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since B+M 6/07: 2534 realized $4,140. A CAC approved NGC AU55 sold for $4,113 as Heritage 10/12: 5568 but it lacked the nice color of the present example.
CAC has approved six in this grade with six finer.
