Variety-1, struck from clashed dies.
The 1850-C is among the more available Charlotte quarter eagles from this decade but it is rare in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with not more than a half dozen known in Uncirculated.
This lustrous slider shows attractive rich reddish toning at the central obverse and this is nicely contrasted by greenish-gold at the border; the reverse is similar in hue but less intense. The surfaces are “busy” as a result of multiple clashmarks which are often seen on this issue but there are just a few small marks noted and minimal wear limited to the high spots.
The last non-CAC NGC AU58 1850-C quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $5,750 as Heritage 4/12: 6381. A CAC approved NGC AU58 realized $6,463 as Stacks Bowers 3/14: 6179.
