The 1847-C is the most common Charlotte quarter eagle both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. It has never been easy to find Choice AU examples of this date with completely original color and surfaces and this is especially true now that such coins are in demand.
This is one of my favorite coins in the Sumter Collection due to its deep natural green-gold color. It is very well struck and appears to be entirely unmolested with no signs of old cleaning or processing. Both sides are toned in deep green-gold hues and were it not for a few small ticks on the obverse, this could easily grade AU58.
A surprisingly low number of AU55′s have sold at auction in recent years with just five separate specimens offered since early 2007. None of these was approved by CAC and prices ranged from $2,530 to $3,105. In addition, none were accorded a “plus” grade by NGC or PCGS.
This is a perfect Charlotte quarter eagle for the collector who wants a single choice, high quality piece for type purposes.
CAC has approved five in AU55 with five finer.
