The 1846 is similar in overall rarity to the 1847 and 1849 quarter eagles but it is rarer in high grades. There are an estimated 125-150 known from an original mintage of 21,958. Around seven or eight exist in Uncirculated and nice, mid-range AU’s are not only scarce but are comparatively good value.

This high end, lustrous example more closely resembles an AU58 and there is very little in the way of actual wear on either side. The color is a rich butter-yellow and the obverse is very choice; a few small ticks on the reverse are located below the left wing and they are not easily seen.

Only four PCGS AU53′s have sold at auction since 2005 and none have CAC approval.

As with many of the pre-Civil war quarter eagles from the Philadelphia mint, this coin represents great value for the savvy collector.

CAC has approved two with 13 finer.
