Variety 1.

The 1844-C is among the scarcer dates in the Charlotte quarter eagle series. Around 150 are known from the original mintage figure of 11,622. Survivors tend to come in the EF40 to AU50 range and are seldom seen with natural color and choice surfaces.

This beautifully toned example shows rich caramel tones which deepen at the borders. The strike is typical for the date with weakness on the radials in the stars and at the centers. There is some luster peeking through the coloration and the fields show only a few small, insignificant marks. The eye appeal is far above average for the issue.

An NGC EF45 without CAC approval brought $3,290 as Heritage 4/15: 6068. The last two PCGS EF45′s to sell at auction, both housed in older holders, realized $4,700 (in 2014) and $4,406 (in 2013). I’ve sold two other CAC approved PCGS EF45′s in 2015 but the piece I’m offering here is the nicest.

A great 1844-C for the date collector who appreciates coins with true character.

CAC has approved four in this grade with 11 finer.
