The 1844-C is one of the harder quarter eagles from this mint to locate with natural color, choice surfaces, and a good strike. Any piece which displays all three is rare, regardless of grade.
This is among the more cosmetically appealing EF 1844-C quarter eagles which I have seen or owned. It is uncommonly well-struck with nearly full centers and it is undipped with thick natural green-gold which is exactly “right” for the date. A few small marks can be seen in the obverse fields but the overall eye appeal is exceptional.
The only PCGS EF45 1844-C quarter eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $3,749 as Heritage 5/12: 4778. A non-CAC NGC EF45 sold for $3,290 as Heritage 4/215: 6068.
If you are putting together an Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated set of Charlotte quarter eagles, you know what a tough date the 1844-C is in this grade and with this level of eye appeal.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 11 finer.
