The 1843 quarter eagle is a curious issue. It has a comparatively high mintage of 100,546 yet it is not nearly as easy to find as this high number would suggest. When available, the 1843 tends to come in EF40 to AU50 grades and in Uncirculated, this is a genuinely scarce coin with maybe a dozen known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range.

This rich yellow-gold example is semi-prooflike and it shows excellent detail. There is some minor friction in the left obverse field; without this, the coin would grade at least a point higher and the reverse is very choice.

There have been two MS62′s sold at auction in recent times and neither was approved by CAC. Heritage 5/12: 4774 brought $3,220 while Heritage 2/11: 4331 sold for $3,594

This is the finest example of this date approved by CAC and it is the only one in this grade as well. I have personally handled just a few finer than this.

CAC has approved one in this grade and none finer.
