Large Date variety.
1843-C quarter eagles are known with a Small Date and Large date variety. The latter is far more available and it is seen more often than any other Charlotte quarter eagle from the 1840′s except for the 1847-C. It is not readily available in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated as are all quarter eagles from this mint.
This is a lustrous slider with splashes of nice medium orange-gold color on both sides. The strike, as is common for the date, shows some weakness at the centers but not more so than usually found. The surfaces have a few minor ticks with none bearing mention.
The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction was Heritage 10/11: 4648 which brought $4,025. It was not approved by CAC.
This would make an excellent type coin for the collector who would like to own an affordable higher grade Charlotte quarter eagle which isn’t dated 1847-C.
CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
