There are three rare Dahlonega quarter eagles from the 1840′s and the 1842-D is one of these, along with the 1840-D and the 1841-D. Only 4,643 were made and fewer than 100 are known with most in the VF-EF range.

This “dirty” example shows pleasing medium to deep russet and green-gold hue with a good deal of dirt in the reverse lettering adding further proof of originality. The strike is crisp and clear while the surfaces are choice save for one old hairline on the obverse from the chin to the ear of Liberty.

A non-CAC PCGS EF45 just sold for $4,713 as Heritage 1/14: 6425; it was not nearly as choice as the present example.

CAC has approved 2 in EF45 with five finer.

Ex RYK collection; Goldberg 2/12: 1172 ($5,520), Helem collection.
