RARE UNCIRCULATED 1880-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1880-CC is the second most available Carson City half eagle from the 1880's after the 1882-CC but it is much rarer than its counterpart in Uncirculated. There are likely no more than eight to ten known in Mint State with nearly all in the MS60 to MS61 range.

This fresh-to-the-market coin is the first Uncirculated 1880-CC half eagle I have handled in some time. It is well detailed and vibrant with lovely natural straw-gold color and considerable mint frost on both sides. A few small marks can be seen with a glass on the obverse while the reverse is clean and very choice.

No PCGS MS61 1880-CC half eagle has ever sold at auction. Three NGC MS61's have crossed the block since 2006 with the last bringing $14,100 as Heritage 9/16: 14106.

An important coin for the advanced collector of CC half eagles.
