WONDERFUL PCGS/CAC AU55 1874-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1874-CC is the most available early date half eagle from the Carson City mint but it is rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or so known (and none finer than the two PCGS MS62's; the better of which is ex Robison/Battle Born.

This example has amazing eye appeal, primarily on account of its rich natural green-gold color which is outlined in bursts of reddish-gold. The strike is as sharp as one might imagine on a Carson City gold coin from this era and there is ample luster remaining; some of it with slightly reflective tendencies. A few shallow obverse marks narrowly preclude a higher grade but this is one seriously handsome AU55!

The only PCGS AU55 1874-CC half eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction brought a strong $21,150 as Stacks Bowers 6/13: 2481. A nice PCGS AU55 lacking CAC approval recently sold for $17,625 as Heritage 10/16: 3313.

This is the single nicest 1874-CC half eagle that I have offered for sale in a number of years and it will fit comfortably in a world-class collection of Carson City half eagles.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 5 finer.
