UNDERRATED 1868 HALF EAGLE

I can think of few half eagles which are more underappreciated than the 1868. Fewer than 100 exist from an original mintage of just 5,700 business strikes. This date is seen from time to time in the EF and lower AU grades but most are miserable due to bright, excessively marked surfaces.

This is a very choice coin for the date and grade with natural russet color which deepens at the obverse border. The surfaces are far cleaner than usual for this issue and the overall eye appeal is excellent. If this coin had just a touch more luster, it would have graded 53 or even 55.

The last PCGS AU50 1868 half eagle to sell at auction realized $2,185 in July 2009.

Until this coin stickered there hadn't been a single 1868 half eagle in any grade to have been approved by CAC (!).
