SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU53 1846-O HALF EAGLE

The 1846-O is most comparable to the 1845-O and the 1851-O in the New Orleans half eagle series. The 1846-O is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, rare in AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated.

This choice, frosty example retains much mint luster and shows nice old-gold color with some contrast on the high spots. The surfaces are lightly marked while the strike is average for the date with some centralized softness noted.

A nice non-CAC PCGS AU53 1846-O half eagle sold for $3,525 as Heritage 1/13: 7149. No CAC approved PCGS AU55 appears to have ever sold at auction.

This is the best available quality for this date at under $4,000 and it would fit well into nearly any high-end circulated set of New Orleans half eagles.

CAC has approved 1 in this grade with 9 finer.
