PCGS/CAC 1840 HALF EAGLE

Narrow Mill variety; not designated by PCGS.

This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first appearance of the modified Liberty Head design which would continue through 1907. The 1840 half eagle is not scarce in this grade although most are not choice with natural color.

This example could just as easily of graded AU58 as it shows light wear, choice surfaces and very attractive natural medium orange-gold color.

The last two PCGS/CAC AU55 1840 Narrow Mill half eagles to sell at auction brought $1,495 and $1,668, respectively, in 2012.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with 14 finer.
