RARE UNCIRCULATED 1872 QUARTER EAGLE

The 1872 is among the rarest Reconstruction Era quarter eagles with an estimated 75-85 known from an original mintage of just 3,000 business strikes. This date is very rare in full Uncirculated with around five or six known, the finest of which is the Bass II: 576 coin graded MS64 by PCGS which I sold to a Kansas collector.

This vibrant semi-prooflike example mixes mirror-like reflectiveness and mint frost below light golden hues. The grade is limited by some scattered scuffs and ticks but the eye appeal is exceptional.

Only one PCGS MS61 has sold at auction since 1991. The last two NGC examples both brought $6,463; one in 2016 (this coin before it was crossed over) and another in 2014.

This coin is likely in the Condition Census for the date and it is also likely to be the finest PCGS graded 1872 quarter eagle available to advanced Liberty Head quarter eagle collectors.
