RARE PCGS AU55 1863-S QUARTER EAGLE

Along with the 1862-S, this is one of the rarest quarter eagles made at the San Francisco mint. Under 100 are known, mostly in the EF and lower AU grades.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows a typical strike for the issue with some softness at the centers. There is a good amount of luster seen on both sides and the surfaces are clean for the grade.

No PCGS AU55 1863-S quarter eagle has sold at auction since the Bass II: 538 coin which brought $8,050 in October 1999. An NGC AU55 realized $5,405 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14035.

This Civil War rarity has multiple levels of demand and it should create some real interest.
