CONDITIONALLY RARE 1856-O QUARTER EAGLE GRADED AU58 BY PCGS

While its true rarity is not well known outside of New Orleans specialist collectors, the 1856-O is the second rarest quarter eagle in higher grades from this mint, after the 1845-O. Most of the coins in AU58 holders are overgraded.

This nice lemon-gold slider is well detailed and very clean with just slight wear limited to the high spots. The surfaces show none of the detracting marks which plague this issue and the strike is better than average.

Only one PCGS AU58 1856-O quarter eagle has sold at auction since 2005 and it realized $4,025 as Heritage 10/10: 4624.

This date is almost never seen in Uncirculated (a PCGS MS62 just sold for $35,250 in the Heritage 1/17 auction)  and this nice AU58 seems like awfully good value at 1/10th the price.
