SCARCE 1848 QUARTER EAGLE
This date has fewer than 100 survivors known from an original mintage of just 6,500. It is actually less available than the heralded CAL variety but it is overlooked as are many 1840's quarter eagles from Philadelphia.
This well struck example shows nice natural color on both sides. The obverse is choice with the body of a 53 to 55 coin while the reverse shows a few light, old scratches around the right wing.
The last PCGS AU50 1848 quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $1,998 as Heritage 7/16: 4388.
