No series of American gold coinage has suffered the ravages of conservation more than the Indian Head quarter eagle. Virtually all slabbed Proofs of this type, even those in very high grade holders, have been processed and many are laughable they are so wrong in appearance. When a truly original Matte Proof becomes available, collectors know that they need to act decisively.

A total of 191 Proof 1911 quarter eagles were produced and it is likely that more than half are known with many in the PR64 to PR66 range. As I stated above, most have been conserved and/or processed and look nothing like they are supposed to. The current example is the best 1911 quarter eagle I have personally handled and it is likely the second finest known for the date after a PCGS PR68+ in a private collection. This piece is literally “as struck” with superb deep yellow-gold color and essentially perfect surfaces which show no shiny spots or hairlines.

The best auction comparable is the last appearance of this actual example (see below) where it sold for $63,250 in active bidding.

For the type, CAC has approved just eight coins in PR67 (none finer) with six dated 1911. This suggests to me that the population for this date might be inflated by a few coins.
