The 1883 has the third lowest business strike mintage of any quarter eagle struck after 1875. Only 1,920 were made and this is a scarce date in any grade.
This piece is prooflike as are nearly all 1883 quarter eagles but it is clearly a business strike. The surfaces show the usual quantity of abrasions and some dirt is trapped in the recesses on the reverse.
The last AU58 example of the 1883 quarter eagle to sell at auction was Stack’s Bowers 3/12: 7331. It brought $3,565 and was encapsulated by PCGS.
The 1883 is seen less often than the lower mintage 1881 and 1885 quarter eagles and it remains an undervalued issue in a series full of excellent values.
